Originally published under the title "Transportation Resources on Internet"
UPDATES:
List first published: 10 January 1995
Second version: 31 May 1995
Current version: 13 June 1996
The most comprehensive listing of transportation-related Web sites (including academia, organizations, resources, upcoming conferences, calls for papers, etc.) can be found at Princeton University
HOW TO OBTAIN THIS LIST: I plan to post a pointer to this list every few months to the various mailing lists and newsgroups that are listed in here.
GENERAL NOTES ON THIS LIST:
1. Additions and corrections are welcome. Please send to Colin R. Leech
. Please take a minute to check the
information for your list. Note: I do not personally follow all of
these lists and newsgroups.
2. Feel free to pass this list along to others who might be interested.
3. My intent is to keep this file as short as possible, so I have limited
the amount of description about each resource. Exceptions to this are
mailing lists which are not open to the general public. For more
information on a mailing list, newsgroup, etc. please check it
out yourself.
4. This is not intended to be a complete list of "hobbyist" or environmental
lists and newsgroups, in order to minimize the size of the file. However,
this is not always possible as many straddle these lines. Feel free
to start your own list if you are interested in these areas.
5. Due to the explosion in the number of World Wide Web sites, I have been
unable to keep the list of "other resources" up to date. The current file
contains only a list of mailing lists and newsgroups available via
Internet.
6. Several of the mailing lists have moved over time. Please take note
of the current addresses, and notify crleech@freenet.carleton.ca (Colin
Leech) of any further corrections.

-------
GENERAL NOTES ON MAILING LIST ADMINISTRATION
The "SUBSCRIBE" message (or other commands) is generally placed in the
body of an e-mail message which is then sent to the listserv/listproc/
majordomo, unless otherwise noted. The "Subject:" line is generally
ignored. For more information, send the command "HELP" to the same address.
Generally, the command "INFO" will also be useful, and "INFO "
will usually return information about the specific list.
Most mailing lists offer the option of subscribing in "digest" form, whereby
you will receive a single e-mail message once per day containing all messages
for the day. Listserv and listproc offer this as a configuration option - send
the command "HELP" to the listserv or listproc for details. The majordomo
software handles the issue differently by creating a separate list referred
to as -digest; for example, "alt-transp" and "alt-transp-digest".
To change from regular format to digest format, you would have to send
both "unsubscribe " and "subscribe -digest" commands
to majordomo. Messages sent to either address are distributed to people
on both lists.
To contact the owner (administrator) of a list, the generic addresses
"owner-@host.site" or "-request@host.site" will
usually work. Individual names and addresses of listowners have been
given wherever possible, but realize that these people will change over
time.
Many of the listservs are networked together. Often you can send an info
request to one and it will be forwarded. Similarly many of the listprocs
are networked to each other (but not to the listservs).

Areas on Compuserve and AOL
TrainNet is a discussion forum on Compuserve for the discussion of railways.
America On-Line has its own bicycle forum called the Bikenet, where
on-line customers can browse through a whole host of bike related topics and
discussions. Tim Oey, whose address is [TheCyclist@aol.com], is the moderator
and keeps it in check.
Denise Noe has started a Non-Drivers Support Group on
AOL. It's in the Exchange, under Communities Center, then under support groups.
I'd love for people to compare the transit systems of various areas. Also,
has anyone been able to survive in the suburbs or in a rural area without
driving? Please share your story.
